It was the word he used and until you pointed it out it didn’t seem at all unnatural. I guess she started off as just an aunt but became a ‘mum’ over time.

To whom was your grandad referring when he said “Then her mum said..” This appears to have been spoken by Diana’s mum who, if I get the story right, doesn’t exist.

Anyway, in those days Mums could come and go with the season of the roast which we called ‘snozzle wickets’ on account of their label which always carried more soup than they should. If the fork tines were too tight, the old key would rust bright orange and the door would open with a riot of chariots and an old fudge-based cake that we called ‘thetford sneezer’.
